About

This is a small farm, part prairie, part pine trees and acacia, man-planted many years ago on sand dunes, giving way to grass.

We are about half an hour from the ocean and fifteen minutes from a pond. There's a small pond close to the house. We are a quiet family that finds spiritual peace in hard work, nature and the kitchen. Sometimes we receive only one or two volunteers.

We need tenacious people that can help us in a responsible way, cleaning up after work, not leaving tools or debris in the field, cleaning after meals and keeping a certain order. We are a family that can only receive visitors who will subtract and not add work for us. We are always open to suggestions and discussions, but we make the final decisions even if we are learning many things ourselves. There are main rutines that can be repetitious and extremely simple
Producing the fire for cooking and heating up water, sorting trash and compost, picking manure, pine cones and needles, recycling, feeding cats and dogs, horse and chickens, watering vegetables, weeding and keeping kitchen/dining room clean after cooking. Then there are specific things to get done and you should tell us what area you like best: cleaning up the forest while sorting fire-wood and chipping branches for compost, general maintenance, building with wood, clay and recycled, planting native trees, caring for vegetables, welding, machine maintenance, etc. We will incorporate more animals when we can feed them with our own crops.

We expect people to get involved in the things that need to be done. Some times there's a lot, some times there isn't and we can just enjoy nature. Flexibility. Solidarity.

It's okay to smoke outdoors as long as it doesn't ruin work, it isn't a fire danger and you pick your butts.

We have experimented growing at some point or another:
Amaranth, Quinua, Potato, Xuxu Potato, Sweet Potato, Pumpkin, Carrot, Peppers, Tomatoe, Corn, Lettuce, Arugula, Spinaches, Chard, Kale, Cabbage, Broccoli, Pea, Beans, Cilantro, Parsley, Oregano, Basil, Sage, Rosemary, Garlic, Onions, Berries, Lemons, Tangerine, Pineapple, Fig, Peanut, Cucumber, Eggplant, Watermelon, Mandioca. We get many products from neighbours who have been around for much longer.

The biggest dilema and challenge here is if it is possible to sustain a vegetable production (up to what scale) in time, in sand, with such hungry ants, excesive rains and excesive droughts, but with lots of water beneath and the fertile material that acid pines, nitrogenic acacias and animal manure create. Permaculture planning is very welcome.

The woods provide with delicious Pine Mushroom in season and many wild herbs like Carqueja and Marcela.

CAMPING. Until we build a visitors house, we only have a couple of tents to lend or you can set your own in plenty of shady, or sunny, beautiful areas in the woods. Visitors must use DRY BATHROOM outdoors. It's a structure that is set over a deep hole that becomes covered with sand. Once the hole is almost full, a new hole has to be dug and the bathroom moved. Outdoor hot shower and basin. Visitors must leave all these things clean for the next ones to come.

ROOM. There is a room with bathroom that can accommodate 1 or 2 people, but it isn't always available.

We like to cook and eat well. We share our food with you at our livingroom, but you have to help and things have to stay clean. We eat meats but also quite a varied vegetarian diet, with 3 meals a day. We make very special flat bread and gnocci. And carbonate our own perforation water.

WiFi available outside our house but you have to limit the use yourself, only for important stuff. Upload is slooowww.

Please give us a contact in Skype, Whatsapp or similar to talk, go over details and get to know each other. If in Uruguay, we can also talk on the phone. We can only accept people that we have spoken with.

A kilometer away from the Atlantic Ocean, on Route 10, very close to the small town of Aguas Dulces, Rocha, Oriental Republic of Uruguay. 290 km. away from Montevideo. 150 km. from Punta del Este. 80km. from Chui, Brasil.

Required: medical insurance with a specific telephone number to call in Uruguay, in case of accident.

Spring/Summer: October-March. Fall/Winter: April-September (it does get quite cold some days, specially at night 0ºC). We don't receieve people between Xmas and NewYear.

Hard sun and bugs in summer. Usually puddles and mud in winter. Boots, gloves, recommended.
