We live in a riverside wonderland that lies just South of Aguas Corrientes, Canelones – an hour north of Montevideo by car. In the past, this 100 acre property was a botanical reserve and tourist destination. When we purchased the land in 2011 it had been abandoned for 15 years. We have a large organic garden and harvest guayabas, wild berries and tangerines from the forest. The property has five houses, a salon, a stream, a little lake, a bamboo forest, eucalyptus groves, ancient pines, palms, armadillos, rabbits, foxes, giant lizards, and a seemingly endless variety of birds, mushrooms, and butterflies – all set against the beautiful Santa Lucia River.
The volunteers house has two bedrooms with private bathrooms and private entrances. Couples and traveling companions share a bedroom. Singles have their own room. Solar hot water showers are located next to the Salon.
Volunteers cook their own vegan or vegetarian meals in the shared kitchen of the volunteers house. We provide all the food. We eat out of the garden and go to a street market once a week in a nearby town.
We have high speed wireless internet. A laptop Mac is available for volunteers in the computer room. Volunteers have access to bicycles and a boat. Afternoons and weekends can be spent on the river, exploring the property, or riding in the countryside. The property includes a horseshoe bend in the Santa Lucia River known as “La Isla”, with private beaches and a secluded lagoon. The small town of Aguas Corrientes is a five minute bike ride away. The Club Nautico of Aguas Corrientes offers inexpensive kayak lessons and has a beautiful beach that is open to the public. Weekend or day trips to Montevideo are easy. Buses run 10 times a day. The trip takes an hour and a half and costs about 80 pesos.
We're looking for volunteers who cooperate well with others. Some of the projects we'll be working on this season are: Preparing garden beds, Planting and harvesting vegetables and flowers, Cutting the lawns and layering grass with manure to create new garden beds, Clearing and maintaing walking paths along the river, Cutting and storing fire wood, General maintenance of the houses. We require a two week minimum stay. We welcome volunteers from November to May.
