We are Andrew and Flora - a young couple from Scotland and Hungary. We purchased this property in 2017 from Steve, who established the Ecopark seven years ago. We are excited to take on this fantastic project and further the goals of teaching others about organic gardening, sustainability and healthy living. Steve has moved to the USA to work in nature conservancy, but we are pleased to say, for those who have known Steve, that he will continue to visit and help on future projects.
This riverside wonderland lies just south of Aguas Corrientes, Canelones – an hour north of Montevideo by car. This quiet, peaceful and eco-friendly oasis was a botanical reserve and tourist destination in the past.
We have a large organic garden and harvest guayabas, wild berries and tangerines from the forest. The property has five houses, a salon, a stream, a little lake, a bamboo forest, eucalyptus groves, ancient pines, palms, armadillos, rabbits, foxes, giant lizards, and a seemingly endless variety of birds, mushrooms, and butterflies – all set against the beautiful Santa Lucia River.
We're looking for volunteers who have initiative and are hard-working and creative.
The property is immense and needs a lot of maintaining, care and attention.
We’ll be working on a lot of ambitious projects, including: establishing a free range chicken farm, building tree houses, mastering bamboo construction, and creating meditation and recreational spaces.
We are mainly looking for 4 volunteers.
We are in the process of learning Spanish - so if you speak Spanish that’s a plus!
Some of the projects we'll be working on :
• Preparing garden beds
• Planting and harvesting vegetables and flowers
• cutting the lawns
• Clearing and maintaining walking paths along the river
• Cutting and storing fire wood
• General maintenance of the houses
• Renovating houses
The volunteers house has two bedrooms with private bathrooms and private entrances. Couples and traveling companions share a bedroom. Singles have their own room. Solar hot water showers are available next to the salon (which is a minute walk from all houses).
Volunteers cook their own vegan or vegetarian meals in the shared kitchen of the volunteers house. We provide all the food. We eat out of the garden and go to a street market once a week in a nearby town.
Volunteers have access to bicycles and a boat. Afternoons and weekends can be spent on the river, exploring the property, or riding in the countryside. The property includes a horseshoe bend in the Santa Lucia River known as “La Isla”, with private beaches and a secluded lagoon. The small town of Aguas Corrientes is a five minute bike ride away. The Club Nautico of Aguas Corrientes offers inexpensive kayak lessons and has a beautiful beach that is open to the public. Weekend or day trips to Montevideo are easy. Buses run 10 times a day. The trip takes an hour and a half and costs about 80 pesos.
