I am a Dutch citizen and have been visiting Kyrgyzstan for over 25 years. For my work as consultant for a Dutch engineering company, I drafted a strategy for sustainable development for the Issyk-Kul region and the village of Grigorievka. After that, I decided to execute a part of the strategy myself, in partnership with local NGOs and local people. At Bel-Zhan we focus on sustainable tourism and fruit processing. Both can add substantial value to the present level of income. I like to support the villagers in developing their livelihood in a sustainable way, using environmental friendly materials and technologies and doing community based business. This year, we are starting to harvest, process and certify wild berries (seabuck thorn and berberis) in order to generate income in the village and preserve the bushes that are important for the ecosystem, and thus add value to the local economy and enhance sustanaible development.
For spring and summer 2017 seveal WWOOFERS have already been engaged in to support us with: - drying fruits and other activities. But we still could use some hands from mid-September till mid-October for the apple and pear harvest and drying. Also, we will be starting to harvest and dry seabuckthorn berries from the lake shore. Together with local people. The lodge has a house with a small seperate room for a volunteer. Toilets (waterflushed) and showers (hot water from a solar boiler) are in the garden. We either cook ourselves or invite the neigbors to prepare food. In September we still expect some guests to visit the lodge.
