The farm is situated in a very peaceful environment surrounded by forests and a small lake. It has 4 hectares beside a small lake with 1,5 hectare of vegetables. Our aim is to grow healthy, organic food for ourselves and for our costumers. We want to respect the surrounding nature in everything we do at the farm. For example, we use as much as possible locally grown food, we only use natural soaps and cleaning liquids, we try to keep our water consumption to minimum, we heat our house mainly by wood and we have recently given up water toilet and installed a compost toilet also inside the house. We are constantly looking for ways to do things even more ecological, and we hope the volunteers would adjust to this lifestyle during their stay with us.
Most of the work at the farm is done by hand, so we are happy to invite some extra pairs of hands in the growing season. The work is mostly garden work, planting weeding, tending, harvesting and so on, but also making firewood or repairing buildings etc. In 2017 we also have a building project, so if you are interested in ecological building let us know, you could be working more with the building than on the field. We also pick berries and mushrooms in the forest and make a variety of sauerkraut products. Our main crops are potatoes, carrots, onions, garlic and cabbage. Besides that we have about 30 different kinds of vegetables, berries and herbs. We do not have any animals.
On your free time, you can go swimming in our lake or make a little tour on the rowing boat. We have bikes for you to use and there are plenty of paths in the nearby forests to go for a walk. We heat the sauna every 2-3 days for relaxing and washing thoroughly. The nearest town Joensuu is in 20km distance. We want to keep this farm a place where it's still possible to take a break from being all the time connected to the internet world, but at the library there is internet for free use.
We are vegetarians and we cook mostly our own vegetables and local products. Over 90% of the food used is organic. We share cooking turns with everybody in the house.
You will stay in shared rooms upstairs in the house or in an outside building. We invite 2-4 wwoofers at the time from May to September. We would like to also invite one person or a couple for longer term, so that they could experience the entire growing season and some of the more quiet time here as well. This could work well for someone interested in starting their own farm some day.
The farm was started in 1985 and we have invited wwoofers since 1998. Pjotr, was born in Holland in 1948 and grew up there but moved to Finland 30 years ago and started this organic garden here in eastern Finland 500 km northeast of Helsinki. Niina is a Finn and has been living on the farm since 2011. Now we share the work and responsibility of the farm. Pjotr speaks Finnish, English, Dutch and German. Niina speaks Finnish, English, Swedish and French.
