If you visit us, the majority of your time will be spent on standard dog-related tasks. However, we also spend a lot of our time in the spring and summer working on forestry-related / green-wood projects (basic thinning, ground preparation of training routes, debarking to reuse cut timber as posts, making handrails from green wood for training trails etc). Most of the timber cut is used in-house, for construction projects (of new sick-dog areas, cages, round-wood structures, composts etc). And we spend a lot of time making or fixing living areas, running areas, agility obstacles (often using wood from the local tip) etc for the dogs.
We ask that people commit to visiting for at least four months at a time. This gives the dogs a chance to get to know and trust you but it also means that you will have time to really explore the area and see a little of the changing seasons. Our hugely comprehensive manual for potential interns should hopefully answer any question you may have, including how to travel here.
The farm owners are ex professional athletes / explorers. Pasi was the first Finn to complete an unsupported expedition to the South Pole and is a key instructor in Survival Guild Finland. Hence, he is an expert in summer and winter bushcraft and survival skills so this is a good place to visit for those who really want to expand their outdoor skills. We even run some bushcraft courses mixed into the dog sledding in the Springtime.
If you are thinking about a gap year it's best to get in touch as early as possible.
IMPORTANT: Please send us a message rather than a host request if you are interested in interning with us. We do not accept interns based on hosting requests. We like to get to know you a bit first before offering you a place here :)
