I have 3 ha permacultured farm with animals (horses, sheep, chicken, ducks). Horse is used as a tractor. Next summer we'll have many courses: yurt building, children camps, horsefelting, PCD. You can sleep in a house or a tipi/tent etc. Mostly food is organic or wild. Help is needed for building, collecting firewood, children, farming, animals, cooking... We have started this farm summer 2011 so everything is in the beginning. I'm very open for all good ideas from you, so if you are skilled you can have quite free hands on projects, but no earlier skills are required. If you are artistic, there's space for that too. Here's living 4 children also (3-13yrs). This farm is a home of a family, but very open for people to come and stay and often have a feeling of a community - this will happen also when you arrive.

We are professional organic beekeeepers producing organic honey. We also produce honeybee queens for sale. Volunteers are welcome all year around, but especially during active beekeeping season April - October. Busiest time with most to see is July - Mid September. EXCELLENT opportunity to learn beekeeping by seeing a lot in a small time as we work with all aspects. If you don't feel comfortable around bees or if you want something else we have work with honey packing, equipment maintenance, gardening and general home work. This work we have also outside the active beekeeping season. We have a good size organic garden and a small greenhouse producing vegetables for our own use and for occasional sales outside. We live in country in Central Finland. House is near a lake for swimming and fishing, and there is of course a sauna by the lake. You can borrow bicycles to see around the area. 5 km to village cetre. 30 km to Jyväskylä, a nice university town. Good connections with bus. Area with lots of lakes and nice scenery. We speak English, Swedish, German and a little Spanish. We have three children 15 - 19 years, but they are rarely all at home.

Punainen Tupa is a beautiful red cottage in a peaceful part of eastern Finnish countryside 600m from the finnish-russian border. Work includes various tasks depending on the season: small scale organic vegetable production, constructing raised beds, mushrooming, berry picking, forestry work (making firewood). Volunteers who don't have much practical experience should have interest in above mentioned tasks and willingness to learn as they work along us. Volunteers are expected to participate in simple kitchen duties (washing-up and occasional help with preparing food and beverages). Days off can be spent walking, cycling, swimming (nearest lake is 5 minutes walk from the house), drumming, relaxing, etc. There are currently 1- 2 persons living in the household. Our principles are ecological lifestyle, self-sufficiency, anti-consumerism, veganism, recycling, etc. WWOOFers' accommodation is in two upstairs rooms inside the house. Paying guests are welcome too in which case there is no work requirement. Modest fees. Newly repaired sauna. Bathing facilities are in the sauna which is close to the house and warmed up regularly. There is no other bathroom within the house. Swimming in nearby lake possible from May to November. Vegetarian/vegan food only available. Suggested length of stay for WWOOFERS is about one week. Longer stay possible by arrangement. In fact this is an "embryonic" community. New long term members are looked for! IMPORTANT: Punainen Tupa is relatively remote place, 40 km from the nearest town, which means that entertainment (pubs, clubs and night life) around here is non existent!

The main product of our farm is organic meat, but we also have an organic vegetable and herb garden and bees. Construction projects on the way. Vegetarians welcomed as well as meat eaters. We are not vegetarians, but would be glad to serve vegetarian food. We mostly eat organic. Accommodation can be arranged within the main building but also in a modest summer cottage accross the street (no running water, toilet outside) - an ideal place to stay summertime, if you enjoy your own peace and quiet, or if there will be a group of you. If you are adventurous, you can also stay next to a pond in a hut with an open fireplace. In Lahnalahti there is no real village around. No shops, no pubs. The only entertainment it the nature around. Nearest lake 3 km. 17 km away we have a place by a small lake. There is a canoe and an old style wooden rowing boat. Open air "kitchen", tiny sauna, trees to hang a hammock...

Mairela Holistic Retreat is a small retreat in the forest by a lake. People come for holidays here and some of them have holistic healing treatments too, mostly reiki. We also teach meditation in small group retreats. The gardens are organic and we grow our own vegetables. There are also ducks and chickens for eggs and also meat. There are horses too. I am looking for a volunteer from around the end of April until the end of October. It doesn't have to be the same person for all that time. Accommodation is in the house with me, you have your own room but the shower is also in your room. If the weather is warm enough there will be extra accommodation in the summerhouse. Some time may also be spent at Toivo biodynamic farm as I have close links there. Mealtimes will be taken together, meals can be vegetarian or contain meat. I'm seeking help in the garden and with the animals and some cleaning in the house and cottage. I'm also looking for help with some small building projects. In exchange I can share my knowledge about energy healing and holistic healing particularly in regard to the garden. I will be here alone, except for customers.

Penttila is a hundred years old farmhouse that has been empty for last 20 years. The buildings are in their original condition, so is the garden with old apple trees. I bought the place few years ago to renovate it, and work is going on slowly by traditional methods. I need help with the renovation project, garden, cleaning up the places, and taking care of some animals (variably goats, chicken). Also we have two small kids living in the house during the summer months, so if you are not afraid of children that's a big plus too. So if you are open-minded, independent and interest in learning how to take care of old wooden buildings and their surroundings, you are the right person to spend summer with us. You dont have to be an expert on anything, all work will be taught. Food: we eat simple, mostly vegetarian (also some dumpster diving food sometimes). Accommodation: own room. Electricity: yes. Months to stay: july, august, september

We have two farms closed to each other in really countryside. (The nearest shop or post office 16 km). One with forest and organic growing fields as work, in the other farm we (a family with five persons: Dad, mom, daughters 17 and 19 years and son 12 years) live and we have some animals as a hobby. Our dad don't speak english, but he is very good to "speak and hear with hands and eyes". We are growing egologic fields (oat).Dad is a farmer. Mum is working as an occupational therapist and is working also outside the farm. We have two ponies, one horse, two goats, eight sheeps (we get wool and make woolen stockings ang pullovers to us), two dogs and three cats. One dog is living inside our home, other animals outside. It is many different works to do, depending what season is going on. For example feeding animals, cleaning them or their conditions (folds, stall) or build/repair yards. Here you can also do some forest management or tractor works in fields, pick up herbs, berries or vegetables (just to us or animals as food, we don't sell these). These are just examples. We can tell more with email because it depends so much on seasons. You can have a single or shared (2) room inside in our house. Kitchen, toilet and shower shared with family. In the summer you can also have a tent if you like to try it. Usually we eat breakfast and dinner together, but it depends on timetables of each other. You can also have a special diet if you tell that before. We eat organic food as much as possible. Always it's not available or sometimes it's too expensive.

We live on an old farm beside a small salmon river in Southern Lapland, Finland. we have some forests, grow our own vegetables and heat our house with fuel wood, fish in the rivers and lakes, and pick berries and mushrooms. Our vegetable garden uses no chemicals, only compost and leaves, we grow leaf vegetables, potatoes, root plants, and strawberries. We have 2 children, a cat, and in most summers, 8 or 10 sheep. We rent out 2 wood cabins for nature lovers, fishing enthusiasts and hunters.

We have a farm size of about a hectare by the lake Kemijärvi exactly on the Polar circle. The distance from here to Rovaniemi is 90 km and to the city of Kemijärvi is 30 km. At Kemijärvi we have railway station which is also the final destination for the train traffic. Earlier times we had sheep, a dog and two cats. But now we have only a dog called Poncho (beagle). We grow naturally potatoes, carrots, onions, flowers, salads and so on. We have a compost. We don't use artificial substances. On our farm is growing many, many willows. Our yard in front of the house is large and we have to cut grass one or two times in a week. In autumn we are gathering mushrooms and berries in the forest nearby. And we have a boat and we are fishing very often during summertime. In the winter we fish on the ice making holes. We eat fish almost every day or week. We have three saunas. One inside of our home, one by the lake, also one at our cottage (6 km from here). We have three sons, all of them are studying in the universities in southern Finland. I am 65 years old and now I am retired. I have worked 28 years as a secret of deaf-blinds in Lapland. My wife (59 years) is working as social worker in eastern Lapland commune of Salla. Her cardriving from here to Salla is 100 km. The working prospects in our farm include making wood for saunas and the oven, picking berries, taking care of the garden and our dog, Poncho. And in the winter we have snowworking ( to move snow away from our yard), cleaning our home and helping foodcooking. The length of the work day is some 5 hours.

I, Pjotr, was born in Holland in 1948 and grew up there but moved to Finland 30 years ago and started this organic garden here in eastern Finland 500 km northeast of Helsinki. Niina has lived on the farm since 2011 and we share the work and responsibility. The farm is situated in a very peaceful environment surrounded by forests and a small lake. The forests are rich in berries and mushrooms. There are 4 hec of fields, 1.5 hec of which have a wide variety of vegetables, herbs and berries on them. The produce is sold mainly on the marketplace and in an organic shop in Joensuu, a town 20 km from the farm. We also make sauerkraut, herb salt and garlic powder. Accommodations for 5 wwoofers at a time are in nice rooms in the main house and in an outside building. There is a very good traditional sauna. There are bikes available to explore the surroundings. The food is vegetarian, and of course the warm meals are mainly made from the farm's good vegetables and herbs. There have been at least 150 wwoofers visiting over the years; most of them enjoyed their stay very much. I speak Dutch, English, German, and Finnish. Niina speaks Finnish, English, French and Swedish. Welcome. Pjotr and Niina

We live in an old wooden school building built in the 30's. There's apartments in both ends of the building and big classrooms in the middle. The village is quite small and located in the forest. The nearest shop is in the town of Valtimo 20 km from our place. There's 5 of us living here at the moment; four adults and a 1,5-year old kid (and a cat.) We are into bikes, punk, handicrafts, environmental activism, non-consumerism and d.i.y. We have quite simple living standards, i.e. no running water, no inside toilet, no freezer etc. We do non-commercial farming, growing most of our food (besides grain, oil and dairy) in our garden. The garden is about 500m2 and we also have a small greenhouse. We do all the stuff there by hand without machines. There's also going to be chickens in the summer. We pick berries and mushrooms from forrests nearby. We do traditional log building and there's still a lot of fixing with the mainbuilding. We intend to use the traditional techiques for both building and fixing. We're going to need help from May until September with gardening, building the interior and the roofs for the new buildings and for fixing and painting windows on the mainbuilding. From July to September we also need help for picking berries and mushrooms. Then there's of course the everyday household stuff, like carrying water and wood, taking care of the kid and chickens, cooking etc, which we hope everyone in the house will participate in. We'll offer vegetarian food and an own or shared room, depending on how many volunteers there will be at the time. We'll teach you the basics about what ever you're going to do, from log building to gardening.

We have a farm with icelandic horses and offer riding trails to customers. We have 16 horses to take care of. We have field about 21 hectares and grow hay. Volunteer could help in maintaining the buildings and fences, for example painting the buildings and repairing the fences. Also could help in the fields making hay. We have a forest area and volunteer can help to cut the firewood and also pick berries and mushrooms. The best time for volunteers to come is from May to September. Our farm is in Paltamo, which locates in Northern Finland. From our farm it is 9 km to the village center. We don't have close neighbours. Volunteer can have a single room or small cottage and have meals with the family.

I'm trying to get most of my food from my own farm, I have two cows, working horse, goats and chicken and I keep garden. Most of the work is done without machinery except for the horse machinery like mower. I go occasionally working to the neighbourhoods dairy farm. I try to live with very little money so I wouldn't have to go to work outside my place. I really don't think today's market capitalism will survive for long anymore, so I moved to the country 8 years ago to learn how to live with less money. Some of the farm buildings here need to be lifted up from the ground since this farm was empty for 20 years before I bought this and no-one was taking care of them. Also I'm planning to build a better cowhouse during May-July 2013, there I would need help as in Gardening, firewood and taking care of the animals. Haymaking helpers are needed during July-August. This is quite a big house, lots of beds, can have many helpers at the same time. I have meat, eggs, milk and derivatives, vegetables from myself. Vegan food possible.

I am a 70 yrs old retired professor of sociology and have moved into my childhood home in the Finnish countryside. This is a small-holding where vegetables are grown for my and my friends' use. I grow most common vegetables; the area under cultivation is about 2000m2. The soil is fertile sandy soil and very easily cultivatable. No artificial fertilisers or pesticides are used. The property is next to a lake from which fish and crayfish (in season) can be caught. I have fishing nets and traps and there are two boats with small engines. There are forests with forest berries and multitude of edible mushrooms. The property is situated in the middle of southern Finland in the so-called lake district. The nearest town Valkeakoski,18 kms away. Finland's second largest city Tampere is 40 kms from here and there is an international airport served by Ryanair. I live in an one hundred year old wooden cottage. Next to it is another cottage which has a brand new well-insulated guest quarters. In addition to sauna it has a large room with its own toilet (ecotype), fireplace, double-bed and the necessary furniture. An old 2-storied romantic former grain storage building and a caravan can be used. I have two glass houses, one of about 15 m2 and another of about 6 m2. I live alone. Many friends visit me. I had a series of heart attacks in 2002 and although I am active there are many things which are too tough for me in my condition. I am well-travelled and have lived in many countries for extended periods. I have a house in Sri Lanka where I stay usually November-February period. I read a lot and paint with water colours. I like outdoor life and for that there are plenty of opportunies here. I am also a good cook. I have a Chevy van which seats 9 people. There are good connections by road and rail to anywhere.

Uppgårds is a small farm located in the north of the Åland islands, as a volunteer at the farm you will help whit the restoration of the buildings on the farm, building of an wooden boat, small timber frame projects and participate in the everyday life on the farm. We also have a bandsaw mill on the farm, there are also good opportunities to help neighboring farms, where they raise cows, horses, sheep, rabbits and more. We are a young family with a one year-old daughter and a hunting dog. We can accommodate two volunteers in a shared bedroom.

***We are currently short on volunteers and looking for people who can come up immediately for at least 2 or 3 months*** We run two husky farms in Finnish Lapland - one outside of a village and one in a remote wilderness setting. Both have over 100 dogs. We also run Finland's Centre for Arctic and Polar exploration and we run all aspects of our business as ecologically responsibly as we can (as you can see from our website: hettahuskies.com). If you visit us, the majority of your time will be spent on dog-related tasks. However, we also spend a lot of our time in the spring and summer working on forestry-related projects (basic thinning, ground preparation of training routes etc). We then use the timber in-house, for construction projects (of new sick-dog areas, cages, round-wood structures, composts etc). We ask that people visit for at least a month - preferably three. This gives the dogs a chance to get to know and trust you but it also means that you will have time to really explore the area and see a little of the changing seasons. Our hugely comprehensive manual for potential volunteers should hopefully answer any question you may have, including how to travel here. To be totally clear, we absolutely will not accept volunteers for shorter stays than one month so please don't ask for an exception. In winter we are highly unlikely to accept volunteers for anything less than a 3 month placement. The farm owners are ex professional athletes / explorers. Pasi was the first Finn to complete an unsupported expedition to the South Pole and is a key instructor in Survival Guild Finland. Hence, he is an expert in summer and winter bushcraft and survival skills so this is a good place to visit for those who really want to expand their outdoor skills. If you are thinking about a gap year it's best to get in touch as early as possible.

We have a farm for ecological production of vegetables and herbs in smaller scale, with greenhouses and fields. Depending on the time of your stay we would need help with the cultivation work, weeding of the fields, or harvesting, mushroom or berry picking. We can also use help with some house maintenance (painting, storage cleaning, etc.), or some forestry work. Participation in the kitchen work is expected. We eat together and eat mostly vegetarian food. We eat some meat, but not on a daily basis. We speak German and English. The farm is situated in South-East of Finland, close to the Finnish-Russian border, 20km East of Imatra. The farm is situated at a lake where we can go swimming. The place is remote without public transport connection, so you would need a bike or car for independent travelling. We have bikes to lend. Eventually you might have the chance to go with us when we go to the local markets, for example.

Here at Biodynamic Farm Toivo we are aiming to create a self sustaining community. It is early days yet so we still rely on buying many things from the store, however the more the community grows we hope to reduce this over the next years. At the moment here is 2 permanent persons living and working. Jenni, The Farmer, is a young starter. We always have beds free and welcome anyone who wishes to participate. The work varies through the year and includes planting, weeding(by hand!), harvesting, making preserves, herb drying, feeding our cows, selling our products in the markets.. We will try our best to keep our facebook page updated with our current works and plans, otherwise you can email/call us if there is something you are interested in doing. The cost of bed and board is nothing for those wishing to work the 6 days a week at the farm. If you wish to come here to experience the community and farming lifestyle but prefer not to work, that´s ok too but we ask a 30e/day donation to cover costs of your stay. We happily accept everyone into the community regardless of age, nationality, sex or experience. We just ask that you have a willingness to work and live harmoniously with others and respect the house rules. Additionally we are very interested to hear from anyone who has experience with building, carpentry or farming. We are also very interested in anyone who wishes to stay here for extended periods of time to help organize volunteer workers and to keep the household running. We have 8 cows, a cat and a dog. Toivo is a small biodynamic farm, located approx. 165 km northeast from Helsinki. The nearest town is Heinola, 28 km west from us. The area is peaceful, surrounded by forest and many lakes. We grow vegetables, herbs and their seedlings. We keep contact to Waldorf schools by giving pupils practice on agriculture and farm life. We also have International Working Camp every summer. Among other things we are interested in having chickens & bees and interested in ecobuilding.

Our smallholding is situated near the forest and 3,5 km from a tiny village with a shop, a church and a library in it. We have a vegetable garden, an orchard and some greenhouses. Both of us, Michael and Steffi, took part in Permaculture Design Courses and aim for the diploma. We live in a 100 year old wooden log house. Our two boys are aged 5 and 7. We have a nice little dog, a cat and beehives. There is always help needed with firewood and depending on the season with: garden, yard and house works (cooking, dishes, kids..) We are a German family, living in Finland. We speak german, english, french, finnish and are open to experience other languages... We are vegetarians but the kids sometimes want to eat meat or fish. We are used to have guests in our house and provide therefore a nice guests room with water tab and toilet. Our place is surrounded by forest and fields. It is a very quit place. Therefore we like the social aspect of hosting volunteers from different cultural backgrounds. We live in a very rural area and there is no 'nightlife' nearby, except a pub in the village with Karaoke-events on the weekends. Next town is in 30 km distance. We drive there once a week to visit an international meeting-place, run by the folkshighschool. There are various possibilities to do sports.

The initiators Kora & Thorsten started their life's experiment in 2003 when they weighed anchor from their previous life of commercial activity in Germany, and from all limitations that included. After sailing the Baltic Sea in their old wooden boat for a summer they landed on the Åland islands. Here they started to turn a different kind of life into reality: freed from constraints and destress, in quiet and "creative simplicity" close to nature. The idea grew to affiliate with other free thinking people and to found an ecological society. Contact with new inspiring sources extended and completed the concept: In the heart of the archipelago we want to create a meeting place for joy, health, interchange and the development of consciousness! We need volunteers who like to participate in garden work as well as in camping and guesthouse business. Volunteers work about 30 hours a week for free food, lodging and free use of our ressources (sailing boat, kayak, bike, sauna, round trip on Åland, various activities). Free periods for volunteers can easily be checked on our website.
